Pride 2018

This summer is already a hive of activity, and it’s only the beginning of June! With the Royal Wedding, the World Cup, and much more, it’s just non-stop. But now is the time to set the Harry and Meghan memorabilia aside, don your most colourful outfits and douse yourself in glitter because it is Pride season! With the festivities already well underway, the Hopewiser Guide has made a return with its list of top-picks for the UK’s best pride events. Stay tuned.

But first, as June is LGBT Pride Month we thought we would take a moment to remember just how far the movement has come and why it is so important to celebrate Pride. It has been over 50 years now since male homosexuality was partially-decriminalised in England and Wales, marking the conquering of the first major hurdle in attitudes. The Sexual Offences Act 1967 lifted a ban on homosexual relations between two consenting males in private of whom were 21 years of age or over. For this we pay homage to Labour MP, Leo Abse and Arthur Gore, 8th Earl of Arran for introducing the act.

Two years later, 1969 marked an event which was to influence what we now know as Gay Pride. It was of course the Stonewall Riots. The riots refer to a series of violent demonstrations by members of the LGBT community in response to a police raid at the Stonewall Inn, Greenwich Village, Manhattan, New York City on the 28th of June 1969. The first Gay Pride marches in US history subsequently took place one year later in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago on the first anniversary of the Stonewall Riots on 28th June 1970. If it weren’t for these brave individuals, who knows where we would stand today in terms of gay rights.

We hope you enjoyed that little history lesson, after all, it’s very important that everyone knows the story behind Gay Pride and how it has contributed to its level of celebration today. Whilst some Pride parades have already been and gone, the best are yet to come. Make sure you put the following dates in your diary!

These are just a selection of the many Pride festivals taking place throughout the summer and into the autumn. Make sure you attend at least one of the parades, they’re set to be full of entertainment and glamour and we promise you won’t be disappointed. If you’re travelling to a Pride in a city that you’re unfamiliar with, Hopewiser has a free and easy-to-use app, called Proximity, that allows you to locate all your nearest transport and leisure facilities.
