Royal Mail Alias FAQs

Royal Mail Alias data is a supplementary dataset that captures alternative or unofficial versions of UK addresses, such as building names, historical names, or locally used address formats. When used alongside the Postcode Address File (PAF), it enhances UK address validation by matching these variations to the correct official address, improving accuracy and reducing failed lookups.
Alias address matching is important because many properties are known by multiple names or formats that don’t appear in standard address databases. By recognising these variations, businesses can improve match rates, reduce delivery errors, and ensure customer data is captured correctly, leading to better operational efficiency and customer experience.
Royal Mail Alias data supports address data enrichment by adding additional identifiers such as trading names, building names, and historic address details. This helps organisations verify identities more accurately, detect inconsistencies in customer records, and strengthen fraud prevention and due diligence processes, particularly when validating customer or business addresses.

Information About The Dataset

The Royal Mail Alias File is a specialist dataset that enhances UK address data by resolving common issues caused by alias addresses—alternative names, non-standard formats, or locally known place names that don’t match Royal Mail’s official delivery addresses.

Alias data is not included in the standard Postcode Address file (PAF), however is an additional dataset that can be used to enhance existing address information. It includes 3 million records, so having access with aliases alongside PAF will help identify accurate address more quickly.

There are four types of alias records: Locality, Thoroughfare, County and Delivery point aliases.

  • Locality records include local names and Postally Not Required (PNR) details.
  • Thoroughfare records include alternative, unofficial and combination names used locally for streets and thoroughfares
  • Delivery Point Alias records include additional information such as trading names and building names.
  • County Alias records include historic county names, administrative and postal county information.
