How do you choose a data cleansing company?

With GDPR looming, more and more organisations are looking at their data to make sure they are compliant with the new regulation.  But how do you choose between the plethora of data cleansing companies?

1. Experience

Experience is key when handling data.  There are many companies popping up stating they do data cleansing.  Some are jumping onto the bandwagon of the General Data Protection Regulation coming into force in May 2018. 

Understanding, transferring, merging, suppressing and deduping data takes experience and knowledge.  If a key element is missed then the results can be severely skewed and cause irreparable damage to your brand.

2. Impartiality

Not all data cleansing companies are independent.  Some are tied to a provider of data (or even their own data sources).  An independent bureau service has the ability to assess all data providers and can pull into the master file the correct data sources to give the best possible outcome.

3. References

Ask your provider to supply you with references who can vouch for the quality of their service. Assess whether the reference companies have a synergy with your own in terms of size of database, type of data, security processes etc.

4. Security

Protecting your data is paramount. Don’t send via a freely available web link, make sure your data transfers are encrypted and when stored offsite that your data cleansing provider has the security facilities to match yours.  The company you choose should be compliant with your policies.

5. Customisable Solutions

Don't get cornered into a data cleaning service that provides too much or not quite enough for your organisation.   One size doesn’t fit all. Ask the Bureau Service if they offer any add-on services that could streamline your processes and improve your bottom line.

6. Accountability

Find out how the Bureau Service will measure and track their results. Can they provide you with full reporting?

And finally, the people factor. Ask to meet the person who will be managing your account to make sure not only the organisation meets your requirements but the person running the job is Accountable.
